A love for backyard bird watching!
When and Where to Feed Birds
Feeding birds is most helpful when birds need extra energy, like during temperature extremes, migration, or when natural seed sources are depleted. In the Virgin Islands and other places affected by hurricanes, feeding birds is especially helpful after a storm when food sources are completely wiped out.
It’s important to feed birds where they will feel safe from predators. Predators of small birds in the Virgin Islands include feral or free-roaming cats, mongoose, and larger birds.
Best types of bird food:
Black-oil sunflower seed
Millet
Cracked corn
Bird seed blends
Baked and crushed eggshells
Do NOT feed birds:
Bread
Table scraps
Chocolate
